In this interview, Richard C. Holbrooke describes his almost 30 year relationship with Dean Rusk, the Rusk family, and in particular David Rusk. He speaks of Rusk as his mentor and inspiration for the pursuit of a career in foreign service. He speaks of their philosophical differences over Vietnam and the formation of his views during his years of service as a Vietnamese language officer with the Agency for International Development, 1963-1965. He discusses Rusk's relationships with fellow cabinet members and President Johnson. Holbrooke talks of his work on the Pentagon Papers and of Rusk's reaction to them.
